How to Opt Out of Grok (xAI) Data Training (2026 Guide)

By default, xAI uses your X posts, profile data, and Grok conversations to train its AI models. Here is exactly how to opt out - step by step - and what it actually protects you from.

What Data Does Grok Collect for Training?

Grok is xAI's AI model, integrated directly into X (formerly Twitter). Unlike standalone AI chatbots, Grok has access to the entire X platform - which means the training data it can pull from is significantly broader than most people realise.

According to xAI's privacy policy, Grok is trained using:

Your public posts and replies on X
Your likes, bookmarks, and interaction history
Your profile information including bio and location
Conversations you have directly with Grok
Data shared by X under their data sharing agreement with xAI

The default is opt-in - meaning all of this is collected and used for training automatically unless you go into settings and disable it.

Method 1: Opt Out via X.com Settings (Main Setting)

This is the primary setting that controls whether your X data is used to train Grok. It applies to your posts, interactions, and profile - not just your Grok chat history.

1
Go to x.com and log in

Make sure you are logged into the X account you want to protect. If you have multiple accounts, you will need to repeat this process for each one.

2
Click "More" in the left sidebar, then "Settings and Privacy"

On mobile, tap your profile picture in the top left, then scroll down to "Settings and Support" and tap "Settings and Privacy".

3
Select "Privacy and Safety"

This section controls all data sharing settings for your account, including what X shares with third parties and with xAI.

4
Scroll down to find "Grok" under Data Sharing

Look for a section labelled "Data Sharing with xAI" or "Grok". The exact label has changed several times - if you cannot find it, use Ctrl+F to search the page for "Grok".

5
Disable "Allow your X data to be used to train Grok"

Toggle this off. The toggle should turn grey or inactive. There is no confirmation dialog - the change saves automatically.

⚠️ Important: This setting only stops future data use. Any data xAI has already collected and used for training cannot be retroactively removed from the model. Opt out as soon as possible to limit exposure.

Method 2: Disable "Improve the Model" Inside Grok

When you chat directly with Grok, there is a second, separate setting inside the Grok interface itself. This controls whether your actual Grok conversations are used for training - separate from the broader X data setting above. You need to disable both.

1
Open Grok on X.com or the X mobile app

Click the Grok icon in the left sidebar on desktop, or find it in the bottom navigation on mobile. It looks like a star or sparkle icon labelled "Grok".

2
Start a new conversation or open an existing one

You need to be inside the Grok chat interface to access its settings.

3
Find the settings or privacy option within Grok

Look for a gear icon, three dots, or a settings menu within the Grok interface. xAI has moved this setting several times, so check both the top and bottom of the chat window.

4
Toggle off "Improve the model" or "Use my conversations for training"

Disable this setting. This prevents the specific content of your Grok chats from being fed back into model training, even if xAI still uses other X data.

What Opting Out Does and Does Not Protect

After Opting OutStatus
Future posts used for Grok training✅ Stopped
Future Grok conversations used for training✅ Stopped
Data already used in past training❌ Cannot be removed
X using your data for ad targeting❌ Not affected
X sharing your data with other third parties❌ Not affected
Public posts visible to others on X❌ Not affected

EU Users: Your Additional Rights

If you are based in the EU or EEA, GDPR gives you stronger protections than the opt-out setting alone. You have the right to formally object to your data being processed for AI training purposes, and xAI is legally required to respond.

To exercise this right, send a written objection to privacy@x.ai stating that you object to your personal data being processed for the purpose of training Grok under Article 21 of the GDPR. xAI must acknowledge your request and either comply or provide compelling legitimate grounds for continuing.

In practice, combine both: disable the settings above AND send a formal GDPR objection if you want the strongest possible protection.

Opt Out of Other AI Platforms Too

Grok is not the only AI platform training on your data by default. ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta AI, and others all have similar opt-out processes with varying degrees of difficulty.

Instead of hunting through each platform's settings individually, use TrustScan's AI Training Opt-Out Hub - it collects direct links to the opt-out settings for 30+ platforms in one place.
